Iowa Severe Weather Awareness Week -- April 3-7

This is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. Alan Czarnetzki, meteorologist and UNI professor of earth science, says it's important to know what to watch out for, and what to do when severe weather strikes.

"The average number of tornadoes in Iowa each year is about 46 and peak months for tornadoes are usually May and June," says Czarnetzki. "While the danger from tornadoes is well recognized, the risk from lightning is probably overlooked. On average over the past 30 years, about as many people in the United States have been killed by lightning as by tornadoes. For many reasons, this is a good time of year to review severe-weather safety rules."
