University of Northern Iowa plans presidential-candidate forums CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa, with support from U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin and U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, will host a series of presidential-candidate forums: "Back to School: Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities in American Education." The forums will be held Aug. 20 through Sept. 5 on UNI's campus. The focus of the forums will primarily be policy initiatives related to education and its broader implications for global competitiveness. "Education affects every citizen in the state of Iowa and our nation," said Benjamin Allen, UNI president. "Quality education for all students in all education systems is needed to ensure that America remains competitive in an ever-increasing competitive global economy. We're very fortunate to have the support of our congressional delegation in making education a topic of discussion in the presidential elections. "Education has long been a prized value of Iowans. UNI, with its 131-year history of outstanding teacher education programs, will give Iowans an opportunity to hear presidential candidates' vision and views about education."
