University of Northern Iowa's Camp Adventure™ sends more than 740 students around the globe

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—More than 740 students participated this summer in a dynamic University of Northern Iowa program that offers them an opportunity to travel around the world providing summer recreation programs for dependent youth at U.S. military installations, U.S. Embassies, corporate clubs, international schools and in special programs.

(NAME) , a student from (HOMETOWN) , who attends (UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE), served in (SITE) , as part of the innovative UNI Camp Adventure ™ program.

Students served four branches of the U.S. military this summer-- Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines-- at more than 118 program sites in the Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Japan, Korea, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, United States, Norway, Portugal, Guam and the Marshall Islands. Within the U.S., students were placed in Hawaii, Florida, Texas, Utah, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Illinois, Tennessee and Massachusetts.

Camp Adventure ™ offers a variety of high quality/high impact youth programs, including day, sports, resident, spirit, art, dance, computer and adventure challenge camps, aquatic services and teen programs.

The program serves more than 750,000 children annually based on daily participation rates. Christopher Edginton, director of the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services at UNI, established the program at the University of Oregon in 1985 and brought it with him when he came to UNI in July of 1991. The program began to expand, and more than 11,400 students have been placed since the program's inception.

Students spend a half-semester in a training program, for which they earn academic credit. During this training, they become familiar with the written curriculum for every program Camp Adventure ™ offers.

The program also includes field supervisors and special instructors, bringing total staff involvement for this summer to about 740, according to Edginton. He says specialty camps are usually offered in several sites, with such camps this year in Germany, Korea, Italy and Hawaii. There were specialty camps that offered dance, cheerleader, resident and sports camps. In Germany, the program offered a specialty middle school/teen camp for youth whose parents are currently or recently have been deployed in conflicts in the Middle East.

UNI students who participate in Camp Adventure ™are eligible to receive AmeriCorp ProCorp funding. The AmeriCorp ProCorp initiative is administered by American Humanics, Inc., which is headquartered in Kansas City, Mo.

"American Humanics, Inc. has guaranteed Camp Adventure participants more than $300,000 in AmeriCorp ProCorp funding this year," said Juli Gassman, director of UNI American Humanics and assistant professor of leisure, youth & human services. "This is benefiting UNI students in many ways. First, through their participation in Camp Adventure ™ students receive experience and have the ability to apply classroom theory in a practical setting. They have the opportunity to travel and experience unique cultures. Finally, students are recognized for their services through receipt of funding through AmeriCorp ProCorp. This money can be used to pay tuition or pay off loans."

The Camp Adventure ™ program also has a partnership with Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Ga.; Florida A&M University in Tallahassee; and California State University at Chico. Participants in the program are also taught at staff development camps in San Diego and Eugene, Ore.; University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio; Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.; Paine College in August, Ga.; University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
