UNI announces winners of leadership awards

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Student Leadership Center recently hosted a leadership reception ceremony recognizing students involved in leadership roles and programs during the 2007-2008 academic year. Participants in various events and organizations were recognized for outstanding leadership.
Individual awards were given for Advisor of the Year, Emerging Leader of the Year, the Unsung Hero Award and Student Leader of the Year.

Paul Sapp, admissions counselor for Student Admissions Ambassadors (SAA), was declared Advisor of the Year. This award recognizes an advisor who has excelled and exemplified outstanding service, dedication and leadership to his or her organization, UNI and the community.

The Emerging Leader of the Year award, which is given to a new member of a student organization that has demonstrated leadership in the organization, a commitment to developing his or her leadership ability and has exceeded expectations of membership, was awarded to Katie Halsne, a sophomore finance major with an emphasis in investments, from Woodward. Halsne, a member of CATS (Connecting Alumni to Students), was nominated for her work on the Student Leadership Center Planning Committee.

Bree McClenning, a senior geology and earth science major from Vinton, was awarded the Unsung Hero Award. This award is designed to recognize a student organization member who has demonstrated a commitment to developing leadership ability in the organization and has gone above and beyond the call of duty without seeking recognition. McClenning is a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the national honor society for the Earth Sciences.

In addition to serving as vice president of Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) and vice chair of the UNI Energy Conservation/Sustainability Committee, Adam Bentley, a senior political science major from Iowa City, was declared Student Leader of the Year. This award recognizes a student who has excelled and exemplified outstanding service, dedication and leadership to UNI and the community.

Four group awards were also announced at the ceremony, including the Philanthropic Program of the Year, Diversity Program of the Year, Educational Program of the Year and Organization of the Year.

The Philanthropic Program of the Year award is designed to recognize an organization that has presented a charitable program that all students of the UNI community can attend. This year's award was given to CATS for its Polar Bare Run. The event was a winter-wear drive for the Salvation Army. Participants wore winter clothing they wished to donate, and then shed it before beginning the run.

The Diversity Program of the Year award was given to the Department of Residence Inclusive Community Team for "Let's Talk." This award is designed to recognize an organization that has presented a diversity program for all students of the UNI community to attend.

The Saudi Student Club was the recipient of the Educational Program of the Year award for its Saudi-U.S. Relationship Conference. The conference, in late October, was held to give a Saudi Arabian perspective on the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States, as well as to educate the public about Saudi Arabia's culture and people.

The UNI Colleges Against Cancer received the Organization of the Year award. This award is designed to reflect the overall nature of a student organization. Colleges Against Cancer is part of the American Cancer Society, and the UNI branch focuses on advocacy, cancer education and survivorship through Relay for Life.
