University of Northern Iowa attracts more than 100 geologists

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- More than 100 geologists and paleontologists, geology students, earth science teachers and rock hounds from the Midwest will gather at the University of Northern Iowa, Friday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 19, for the combined 2008 Tri-State Geological Field conference and Society for Sedimentary Geology, Great Lakes Section conference, hosted by UNI's Department of Earth Science.

"The main focus of the conference will be an examination of the Devonian Lithograph City Formation," said Jim Walters, UNI professor of geology and department head of Earth Science. Saturday, Oct. 18, the conference participants will examine quarries and road cuts along 60 miles of the formation transect, from Osage to Cedar Falls.

Lithograph City, from which the formation takes its name, was platted in 1905-1906 and later changed its name to Devonia, according to Walters. "The town grew up around the quarry, which provided limestone for lithographic printing." After the decline in lithographic printing, the quarry's limestone was used as raw material for cement, aggregate and building stone. Only within the past few years has there been a renewed interest in the quarry's limestone for printmaking.

The featured speaker at the Saturday night banquet, Robert Glaslow, professor of print at the University of Iowa, will give the artist's perspective versus the geologist's perspective on the limestone formation. Sunday's field trip stops will include limestone quarries in the Shell Rock and Lime Creek formation, also of Devonian age.

Cost for the conference is $60 for professionals and $40 for students. The conference hotel and the location for the Saturday night banquet, is the Cedar Falls Holiday Inn.
