'UNI Panther Pick Up' concludes off-campus site collection May 28 & 29

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Off-campus students moving out of apartments in the College Hill Neighborhood in Cedar Falls will have an opportunity Thursday and Friday, May 28 and 29, to donate furniture, clothes, shoes, dishes, books and other usable household items to local charitable organizations, through "UNI Panther Pick Up: A new life for your old stuff!" The drop-off site will be from 1 to 4 p.m. both days at the intersection of West 22nd and Olive Streets.

Launched earlier this spring by the University of Northern Iowa, and several partner agencies, as a project to help the environment while benefiting the community, more than 6,700 pounds of materials were collected for those in need. In addition, some 1,800 pounds of metal was recycled, according to Susan Salterberg, Panther Pick-Up project coordinator and program manager with UNI's Center for Energy & Environmental Education (CEEE).

Also, during spring semester finals week, gently used books and textbooks were collected at Duey's Pawn Shop and University Book & Supply (UBS), both in Cedar Falls' College Hill neighborhood, for two programs to help educate students in other countries: Books for Africa and Bridge to Asia. Salterberg said more than 87 pounds of books were collected at Duey's and significantly more at UBS, with the final weight available when they are shipped.

St. Vincent de Paul, Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa and The Salvation Army provided trucks earlier and St. Vincent de Paul is providing a truck for this week's collection. Agency staff will determine whether or not they can accept certain items.

"Instead of tossing unwanted items, students living off-campus will be able to give away materials in usable condition," said Susan Salterberg, "This will be good for community members in need and will reduce what we send to the landfill."

In addition to a number of UNI programs and organizations, working under the auspices of the UNI Energy Conservation Committee, and the non-profit organizations, Panther Pick Up partner agencies include the City of Cedar Falls Department of Public Works, College Hill Partnership and Waste Trac Education Team (Black Hawk County Solid Waste Commission).
