Just for Kicks hosts indoor soccer league for all ages CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Applications will soon be accepted for "Just for Kicks" seventh-annual Panther Pride Indoor Soccer League. "Just for Kicks" (JfK) is a program to train youth soccer coaches and advanced players, launched by the Leisure, Youth and Human Services (LYHS) Division within the University of Northern Iowa's School of Health, Physical Education & Leisure Services. It is hosting the league Saturdays and Sundays beginning November 2009.
UNI students, with faculty supervision, manage the JfK program to gain experience working with the community. All JfK faculty and staff hold coaching diplomas and endorsements from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). Faculty and some of the staff are area high school soccer coaches and hold state coaching endorsements. A number of the JfK staff also have referee certifications from USSF. All referees are trained and endorsed by the National Intramural Recreation and Sports Association (NIRSA), a professional organization that endorses university-level club and intramural sports programs.
This year's program will offer two tournaments and league play. Games will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the UNI Wellness and Recreation Center (WRC), the Malcolm Price Lab School's Nielsen Fieldhouse and the Waverly-Shellrock High School. Recreational divisions are available for players under eight up to under 14 and a coed adult division. The league also includes a separate competitive division for female and male high school participants and a competitive adult futsal division. All divisions are open for both individual and team registrations. JfK also offers training that includes technical, tactical and observations of players for an additional fee.
Contact JfK Director Sam Lankford, UNI professor of leisure, youth & human services, for a registration form at Sam.Lankford@uni.edu. Send registration and payment to Just For Kicks, Tournament Director, UNI WRC 211, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614.
