UNI offers waste reduction workshops for graduate credit CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Waste Reduction: Addressing the Overlooked "R," a one-hour University of Northern Iowa graduate credit course, will be held at the Scott Area Recycling Center in Davenport as a two-part course in January and April of 2010. The courses are offered through UNI's science education program and UNI's Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE) in the College of Natural Sciences.
The course will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. The follow-up workshop will be held Friday, April 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. Cost of the workshop is $50.
Thanks to support from local solid-waste agencies, a limited number of free registrations will be available to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers, says course instructor Susan Salterberg, UNI CEEE. UNI is able to offer graduate credit, books and lesson plans at a reduced price thanks to funding support from the Resource Enhancement and Protection Conservation Education Program and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Solid Waste Alternatives Program. Other supporters include the East Central Iowa Council of Governments and solid waste agencies and landfills, including the Waste Commission of Scott County.
