UNI professor inducted into Iowa Academy of Education CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Deborah Gallagher, a University of Northern Iowa professor of special education, was inducted into the Iowa Academy of Education in a ceremony held at UNI on Oct.16.
The Iowa Academy of Education (IAE) is composed of Iowa scholars whose work has made a significant contribution to the field of education. It is a state organization of 20 active members whose function is to inform educational policies and practices in the state of Iowa through the consideration and analysis of educational issues.
Gallagher's work in disabilities studies has been published in many journals both in the U.S. and Great Britain. Her book, "Challenging Orthodoxy in Special Education: Dissenting Voices," was recently selected as one of three Key Texts for the European Educational Research Association.
She was a founding member of the Disabilities Studies in Education Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association. Gallagher also has served as a consultant to the Iowa Department of Education, worked with Area Education Agency 267 on transition of special education services to a non-categorical model and acted as president and secretary to the Black Hawk County Learning Disabilities Association.
She was one of four new inductees into the academy. The other inductees include: Barbara Dougherty and Linda Serra Hagedorn, both from Iowa State University; and, Brian Marsden Hand, University of Iowa. To learn more about IAE, visit the Web site at www.education.uiowa.edu/iae.
