UNI's Chaplain receives lifetime membership in Professional Developers of Iowa CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Don Chaplain, senior program manager with the Institute for Decision Making (IDM) at the University of Northern Iowa, was recently awarded the highest honor -- a lifetime membership -- from the Professional Developers of Iowa (PDI) at the 2009 Annual Fall Meeting. The award was presented by Randy Pilkington on behalf of all PDI past presidents, current board members and membership.
"Don embodies what it means to be an economic developer in Iowa," said Pilkington, executive director of IDM. "He has excelled in all levels of the profession, from local developer to statewide service provider, leader and mentor. There are few developers in Iowa today who haven't been positively affected by Don in some way."
Ilene Deckert, 2009 PDI president and associate director of economic development at Eastern Iowa Community College District, announced the award during the luncheon membership meeting.
"Don's service to PDI as a board member, secretary/treasurer, vice president and president is exemplary," she said. "His commitment of time and efforts combined with his knowledge and passion for economic development makes him most worthy of this honor. Lifetime membership in PDI for Don Chaplain -- I can't think of anyone more deserving."
"I am grateful to have been chosen for this honor especially when it is awarded by my colleagues in economic development." Chaplain said. "Having been a member of PDI for more than 25 years, I remain impressed with the quality of leadership that continues to guide the organization."
Chaplain is a past president of PDI, has served as president of the Mid-America Economic Development Council and is the associate director of the Heartland Economic Development Course. He began his economic development career in Iowa in the 1980s, receiving the Certified Economic Developer designation in 1990. In 1992, after 10 years as a community-level developer, he joined IDM. As IDM's senior program manager, Chaplain leads staff teams to identify, secure and implement applied research opportunities.
IDM serves nearly 50 community or regional partner clients each year, having assisted a total of 635 communities, regions and groups in all 99 Iowa counties since 1987. According to IDM clients, approximately 1,500 jobs per year are created as a result of IDM's technical assistance.
IDM is a program of Business and Community Services, a division of the College of Business Administration at the University of Northern Iowa.
