UNI students honored for work on health promotion

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Each semester at the University of Northern Iowa students in the Health Promotion Program Planning course select a health problem to be the focus of their health promotion planning efforts. This past spring, the 27 students enrolled in the course competed for cash prizes sponsored by Group Benefits Design Corp. (GBD), a local employee benefits consulting company.

Students developed plans on musculoskeletal and back injury prevention for Bertch Cabinet Mfg., Inc., a GBD client based in Waterloo, said Thomas Davis, UNI professor of health promotion. In the past, he said students have developed plans targeting a variety of health problems in fictional populations. This was the first time students created plans targeting a real workforce.

Using aggregate cost and injury data, Davis said the students prepared program plans that verified the severity of the back-injury problem, identified target behaviors and environmental circumstances that contributed to back injuries and proposed programs to reduce the injuries.

The students' plans were reviewed by a panel of judges including John Monaghan, president of Group Benefits Design Corp.; Maria Johnson Drees (B.A. '04), health and wellness consultant for Group Benefits Design Corp.; and Mitzi Tann, human resources director for Bertch Cabinet Mfg., Inc.

Nicole DeSousa, a senior women's health promotion major from Dyersville, received first place and a cash prize of $200; Lauren Brown, a junior health and fitness promotion major from Ames, received second place and a cash prize of $150; Jennifer Lathrum, a junior health and fitness promotion major from Saint Charles, received third place and a cash prize of $100; Shavise Hargro, a junior movement and exercise science major from Gary, Ind., received fourth place and a cash prize of $50.

These students will represent UNI at the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) National Health Education Case Study Competition, which will take place March 16-20, 2010, in Indianapolis, Ind. Student teams from this course placed first in the competition from 2006 to 2008.
