UNI's EXPORT Center receives award for contributions to civil rights

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Iowa EXPORT Center of Excellence on Health Disparities, based at the University of Northern Iowa, has received the Friends of Iowa Civil Rights, Inc. Non-Profit/Community Organization Award for the significant contributions the Center has made to civil rights in Iowa. The Center was nominated by Susan Koch, UNI associate provost and dean of the Graduate College.

The award was presented at the Iowa Civil Rights, Inc., annual awards luncheon on Monday, Oct. 16, on the Iowa State University campus, as part of Iowa's Mosaic annual statewide diversity conference.

UNI's Iowa EXPORT Center of Excellence on Health Disparities has taken a lead role in several initiatives to help diversify the state's healthcare workforce. The center published a comprehensive "Strategic Plan to Increase Minorities in the Health Profession in Iowa" with funding from the Center on Health-Workforce Planning at the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). The document has been used extensively by training organizations, local health departments and state entities, according to Michelle Yehieli, UNI associate professor of health promotion and education, and one of the plan's authors.

The Iowa EXPORT Center is coordinating the Iowa Minority REACH Network to establish a statewide advisory council of minority health professionals and agencies devoted to diversifying the health workforce. ?
The Center also leads the state in providing cultural competency training for health professionals and operates the Global Health Corps, which is Iowa's premiere interactive field-based training program for students in culturally competent health care.
