Thursday, March 22, 2007 UNI department's name change reflects trends in discipline CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Department of Communicative Disorders' name has changed to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The name change was approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, during its March meeting and is effective immediately. "Communication Sciences and Disorders is a more accurate reflection of our field," said Clifford Highnam, head of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. "There's been a push in health care and education to put scientific-based evidence first in decisions involving client care, which is something our department has always believed and now has a name that reflects that." The UNI Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs that prepare students to work in speech-language pathology and audiology professions. Students at both levels participate in clinical practicums in the Roy Eblen Speech and Hearing Clinic and in off-campus clinical placements. The speech-language pathology program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. "Speech and language sciences are the foundation of the core content in our undergraduate and graduate curricula," Highnam said. "The curricula emphasize normal communication processes at one level, disordered processes at another, and assume that a thorough study of normal processes is critical to the understanding and investigation of disordered processes. Including both 'sciences' and 'disorders' in the department name properly emphasizes what our program is about." ###
