Thursday, October 01, 2009 Pauline Barrett establishes $1.5 million endowed scholarship fund for UNI students CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Pauline Barrett, a well-known Waterloo philanthropist, is continuing her generosity to the University of Northern Iowa and her commitment to the youth of the Cedar Valley, through a $1.5 million gift to the UNI Foundation. Barrett's gift has established the Pauline R. Barrett Endowed Scholarship Fund to support students from the Cedar Valley who want to attend UNI.
Nearly 85 percent of UNI students receive some form of financial assistance for costs associated with college. "Without scholarship support, opportunities for attending college are limited," said UNI President Benjamin Allen. "Scholarship support ensures accessibility and affordability for a talented, diverse student body. We are grateful to Pauline for investing in our students. This gift is yet another example of how UNI and the Cedar Valley have benefitted from Pauline's generosity."
Barrett is noted for her philanthropy and volunteerism throughout the community, especially for education, health and culture. A past member of the Boards of Trustees of the YWCA, the Community Foundation of Waterloo and Northeast Iowa, and the Covenant Medical Center Foundation, she also served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Waterloo and was secretary of the church's foundation board.
Her latest gift to the UNI Foundation continues Barrett's leadership giving to the institution through the UNI Foundation, including gifts toward the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, the McLeod Center and the recent Russell Hall renovation, where the Barrett Wing is named in her honor.
Barrett's gift is part of the $150 million Imagine the Impact Campaign for the University of Northern Iowa. The campaign focuses on scholarships, faculty and program support. For more information, visit www.uni-foundation.org.
